Expansion of Turkmenistan’s Industrial Fertilizer Infrastructure
Saipem, a global leader in the engineering and construction services sector, has announced a major new urea license agreement with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI) for a project in Turkmenistan. This agreement facilitates the development of a state-of-the-art fertilizer plant designed to meet growing regional and international demand. The proposed urea unit is engineered for a substantial production capacity of 3,500 tonnes per day, incorporating advanced technical specifications to ensure high standards of operational efficiency, environmental reliability, and workplace safety.
Leveraging Proven Snamprogetti Technology
The foundation of this new project is Saipem’s proprietary Snamprogetti™ Urea technology, which has a long-standing track record in the global petrochemical industry. This specific technology was previously utilized in the successful development of the Garabogazkarbamid plant, a flagship facility commissioned in 2018 in Garabogaz. That earlier project was also a collaborative effort involving Mitsubishi and Gap Insaat Yatirim ve Dis Ticaret A.S., with Saipem delivering the core technological components under a 2014 contract. The repeat selection of this technology underscores its effectiveness in the unique climatic and logistical conditions of Turkmenistan.
Strategic Synergy Between Global Engineering Giants
This latest agreement is a direct extension of the strategic industrial cooperation between Saipem and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The two companies have cultivated a robust partnership over the last decade, collaborating across multiple technological domains and geographic regions. By combining Saipem’s specialized urea licensing with MHI’s comprehensive plant construction expertise, the alliance continues to deliver large-scale infrastructure projects that are pivotal to Turkmenistan’s economic diversification strategy.
