Russian state media outlet TASS has released an evaluation of the Su-35 air superiority fighter, emphasizing its unmatched level of operational testing in active conflict. Ruslan Pukhov, head of the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, stated that the Su-35 likely possesses the world’s most extensive modern record for air-to-air engagements and successful shoot-downs among fourth-generation fighters. According to Pukhov, the aircraft’s success is driven by its specific design for high-end aerial dominance, a reputation bolstered by its performance during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. These assessments coincide with the Russian Aerospace Forces' announcement on April 17 regarding the delivery of a fresh batch of Su-35 units.

The Evolution of the Flanker Lineage

The Su-35 entered active service in early 2014 as a significantly upgraded derivative of the Soviet-era Su-27 Flanker, which originally joined the Soviet fleet in 1984. This modern iteration incorporates features originally intended for the Su-37, a project that stalled in the late 1990s due to the post-Soviet economic downturn. While the Su-35 represents the pinnacle of the Flanker family, its development was a necessity born of delays in Russia’s fifth-generation programs. According to military historians, the Soviet Union had originally intended to field advanced stealth fighters like the MiG 1.42 by 2001, but the disintegration of the state delayed such technological leaps by more than twenty years.

Superiority over Aging Western Airframes

Current Russian and Ukrainian sources largely agree that the Su-35 maintains a decisive advantage over the Ukrainian Air Force’s existing inventory. This superiority extends to newly delivered Western equipment, including United States-made F-16s and French Mirage 2000s. Pukhov argues that the Su-35’s combination of long-range radar and missiles capable of striking targets several hundred kilometres away ensures a "first see, first strike" capability. This hardware allows the Russian Aerospace Forces to dominate engagements against older fourth-generation Western platforms that lack the detection range and missile reach of the heavy-weight Russian fighter.
