Targeting the Heart of the Odesa Jewish Community
A devastating wave of overnight bombardments targeting southern Ukraine has resulted in the destruction of one of Odesa’s primary Jewish educational facilities. The "Or Avner" school, a central institution operated by Chabad-Lubavitch, took a direct hit during the early morning hours of May 1, 2026. The facility, which serves hundreds of students in the Black Sea port city, was left in ruins after the impact shattered its structural integrity. According to local reports, the school has been declared totally unusable, marking a significant blow to the community’s social and educational infrastructure during a period of sustained regional conflict.
Orphanage Infrastructure Damaged Amid Explosions
The violence also extended to the "Mishpacha Ukraine" orphanage, a facility located in the immediate vicinity of the strike. At the time of the explosion, the orphanage was housing 124 children, ranging from infants to teenagers. While the building sustained substantial damage to its facade and windows, community leaders confirmed that none of the children or staff members were injured. Rabbi Avraham Wolff, who leads the institution, described the moment of impact as a violent event that shook the entire street. The close proximity of the strike to a high-density residential center for minors has drawn sharp condemnation from international humanitarian organizations.
Transitioning to Underground Education Models
In the wake of the destruction, the Odesa Jewish school network is being forced to adapt to a radical new reality. Chaya Wolff, who oversees the educational programs, announced that high school students will be relocated to study alongside younger pupils in makeshift corridors and underground shelters. These temporary classrooms are designed to provide a semblance of continuity while ensuring the physical safety of the students during the frequent air raid sirens that plague the city. The administration emphasized that despite the loss of their physical building, the commitment to providing a full curriculum remains the top priority for the 2026 academic term.
