Moscow Reinforces Support for Iranian Nuclear Sovereignty
Russia has formally reaffirmed its diplomatic alignment with the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding the sensitive issue of nuclear technology. During a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the capacity to enrich uranium for civilian applications is an "inalienable right" belonging to Tehran. This high-level endorsement comes as Iran continues complex negotiations with the United States, positioning Russia as a primary defender of Iran's technological autonomy on the international stage.
A Universal Principle of Nuclear Development
According to Lavrov, Russia’s stance is rooted in what he described as the "principle of the universality of the right to enrichment." The Foreign Minister signaled that Moscow remains indifferent to whether Tehran chooses to temporarily "pause" these activities or "insists on preserving" them during its current dialogue with Washington. By framing the issue as a universal right, Russia is attempting to establish a legal precedent that would protect Iranian interests regardless of the specific tactical concessions made during bilateral talks with American officials.
Sino-Russian Coordination on Middle Eastern Stability
The declaration was made during a two-day state visit to China, where Lavrov met with Chinese leadership to discuss regional security. Lavrov emphasized that both Russia and China "firmly support" ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve current Middle Eastern conflicts. He noted that the goal of these talks is to reach "realistic and fair" outcomes that fully respect the legal standing of all involved parties, stressing that any final agreement must be grounded strictly in the frameworks of international law.
