A Human Rights Challenge to Channel Island Authorities

Roman Abramovich has officially taken his legal battle to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), targeting the Jersey government’s multi-year criminal investigation into his financial affairs. The billionaire oligarch, who remains under UK sanctions due to his historical ties to Vladimir Putin, is currently the subject of corruption and money laundering allegations in the Channel Island. Lawyers for Abramovich contend that the proceedings are a "clear abuse of power" and lack transparency, asserting that no credible evidence has been produced despite £5.3 billion of his assets remaining frozen since 2022.

Article 6 and Article 8 Violations Cited

The claim filed at the ECHR centers on two specific breaches of the European Convention on Human Rights. Abramovich’s legal team argues that his right to a fair trial under Article 6 has been infringed by a process they claim is driven by political motives rather than legitimate legal standards. Additionally, they allege a violation of Article 8—the right to privacy—contending that the public announcement of the investigation in 2022 caused undue reputational damage given that no formal charges have been brought in the four years since the probe began.

The Chelsea Sale Stalemate and Proceeds of Crime

The investigation has created a significant legal hurdle for the distribution of the £2.4 billion generated by the sale of Chelsea FC in 2022. While Abramovich originally pledged the funds to "all victims of the war in Ukraine," the Jersey authorities have indicated that they may view these funds as the "proceeds of crime." This designation effectively prevents the transfer of the money to charitable foundations, as the UK government simultaneously threatens to sue Abramovich to force the release of the capital. The stalemate has left the multi-billion-pound sum sitting in a frozen bank account for over 48 months.
