The Anatomy of a Seven Month Inside Job
The bustling core of D.C.’s Chinatown was gripped by a string of brazen holdups that authorities have now confirmed was a highly coordinated conspiracy. Between August 2023 and February 2024, the iconic three story Walgreens at 7th and H streets was targeted seven separate times. Federal prosecutors revealed that Gianni Robinson served as the "operational hub" for the crew, connecting two corrupt store managers with a masked gunman. The managers, who included Robinson’s uncle and his girlfriend, allegedly took turns playing the role of the terrified victim to ensure the robberies appeared legitimate on surveillance footage.
Coordinating Logistics and Getaway Arrangements
According to court documents, Robinson’s role went far beyond simple participation, he managed the granular details of each heist. Text messages displayed during the proceedings showed Robinson directing the gunman on where to meet managers and providing precise instructions on how to access locked office safes. Prosecutors noted that Robinson also sourced firearms for the crew and handled the distribution of the nearly $29,000 stolen during the seven month spree. His defense attorney argued that Robinson was a "connector" influenced by a volatile upbringing and drug addiction, but the court emphasized his central role in planning the repeated attacks.
A Violent Escalation and a Guard’s Intervention
As the robberies continued, the drugstore chain increased security measures, hiring armed guards to protect the location. This led to a violent confrontation in December 2023, when the gunman successfully disarmed a security officer and stole his weapon along with cash. The conspiracy finally collapsed on February 11, 2024, during the seventh attempted robbery. According to police reports, a security guard engaged the masked assailant, shooting him in the chest. The gunman survived the encounter, leading to a wave of arrests that exposed the involvement of the store's own management.
