Navigating the Financial Impact of Global Conflict
The new $13,450 hourly rate was calculated by Health NZ and ACC to incorporate fuel costs, yet it was finalized just prior to the most recent steep price surges caused by the geopolitical situation in the Middle East. Despite this, the agencies have stated they will not revisit fuel cost adjustments for another year, leaving the primary lead agencies—Maritime NZ’s RCC and the Police—to manage the higher financial burden.
Maritime NZ maintains that even with the increased rates, helicopters often remain the most "cost-effective" response when speed and specialist crews are required to save lives. The RCC currently operates with a $3.9 million budget for SAR operations this year and expects to remain within those limits by year-end, despite the heightened per-hour expenditure.
Prioritizing Life Over Budgetary Constraints
The Police and RCC have reiterated a "life-first" policy, asserting that the most appropriate asset will always be deployed regardless of commercial sensitivities.
Operational Priority: When time is of the essence, air assets will be dispatched without hesitation.
