A Nation Pushed to the Brink by Economic Collapse
The civilian population in Iran is currently facing a humanitarian catastrophe characterized by a total breakdown of essential services and historic levels of hyperinflation. Maria Martinez, the IFRC head of delegation for Iran, reported from Geneva on Friday that access to basic food and life-saving medication has become severely limited for the majority of the population. Even prior to the start of major hostilities on February 28, the nation was grappling with 70% general inflation; however, food inflation has now surged past the 100% mark, leaving millions unable to afford daily sustenance.
Massive Mobilization of the Iranian Red Crescent
In response to the escalating misery, the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) has executed one of the largest mobilizations in its history. Approximately 100,000 responders have been activated across 529 branches, spanning 197 cities. These teams are operating in high-risk environments to conduct search and rescue operations, provide emergency medical care, and maintain a semblance of a health safety net. To date, the IRCS has successfully rescued more than 3,500 individuals from immediate life-threatening situations, though the scale of the need continues to outpace available resources.
The Psychological Toll and Surge in Distress Calls
Beyond physical injuries and hunger, the conflict has inflicted deep psychological trauma on the Iranian citizenry. The IFRC reported that a national distress hotline has already received over 67,000 calls from individuals seeking mental health support. In response, aid teams have prioritized psychological first aid alongside their medical interventions. This "invisible" crisis of mental health is being treated with the same urgency as physical wounds, as the prolonged uncertainty and loss of life continue to fracture the social fabric of the country.
