A Gathering of Elite Numismatic Rarities

The South African numismatic community is preparing for one of the most significant events of 2026 as three rare coins with a combined valuation exceeding R2 million go on display. The exhibition will take place at the Johannesburg Coin Show on Sunday, March 29, at the Wanderer’s Club in Illovo. Following the public viewing, the items will lead Bassani Auction House’s "Signature Auction 23," a high-profile sale featuring nearly 70 of the most sought-after banknotes and coins in the nation's history.

The Crown Jewel: The 1892 ZAR Full Pond

The undisputed highlight of the auction is the 1892 ZAR Full Pond (graded PF53), an exceptional gold piece from the era of Paul Kruger’s Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek. With a known mintage of only ten struck, this particular coin carries a staggering valuation of R1.75 million. Senior numismatic expert Landon Coleske noted that this auction represents a rare opportunity for investors, as it brings together a collection of scarcity and quality seldom seen in a single marketplace.

Historical Significance of the Half Pond and 1931 Tickey

Complementing the Full Pond is its fractional counterpart, the 1892 ZAR Half Pond (graded PF58). With only 20 pieces ever minted, it is listed in the prestigious Hern catalogue at a value of R550,000. Additionally, collectors are eyeing the 1931 South African Tickey (3 Pence), graded PF63. This silver coin is a product of the Great Depression era, during which the South African Mint severely restricted silver production. Only 62 were minted in proof condition, giving it a current market value of over R275,000.
