Habitat Engineering and Co-existence

To ensure the survival of the relocated population, the Waimakariri District Council's biodiversity team, led by Dr. Bex Dollery, undertook extensive habitat enhancement.

Physical Enhancements: The team constructed rock and wood piles to provide essential cover and basking spots for the lizards.

Population Management: Ecological surveys conducted by Wildlands Consultants Ltd confirmed that while the Kaiapoi lakes already hosted a resident lizard population, the area could support both groups co-existing.

Legal Compliance: A comprehensive lizard management plan was required to secure approval from the Department of Conservation (DOC) before the relocation could proceed.
