Strategic Regional Hub Nears Operation
The Prince Buthelezi Mall in Empangeni has entered its final operational countdown, with the grand opening scheduled for April 30, 2026. Spanning approximately 37,000 square meters of gross leasable area, the development is positioned as a first-class regional center designed to serve as a retail catalyst for Northern KwaZulu-Natal. The project, which represents a collaborative investment by the Moolman Group, Twin City, and Melta Capital, culminates four years of planning and 15 months of active construction. Its launch coincides with a long weekend in South Africa, a strategic timing choice intended to maximize initial foot traffic and community engagement.
Honoring a Legacy through Architecture
Named after the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the traditional prime minister to the Zulu monarch and founder of the Inkatha Freedom Party, the mall’s design incorporates elements of local cultural heritage. Formerly known as the Greenhills Mall during its early planning stages, the building’s aesthetic is inspired by the rolling hills and sugarcane fields of the Zululand landscape. Architectural features include vertical green slats at the entrances that echo the surrounding agricultural environment, while a warm color palette of earthy tones and fever tree textures has been utilized to create a welcoming, high-end environment for visitors and residents.
Retail Expansion and Regional Firsts
The mall is set to house roughly 100 stores, with a tenant mix heavily focused on dual-anchor supermarkets and high-demand fashion retailers. National brands including Checkers Fresh X, Shoprite, Woolworths Food, and Boxer will serve as the primary grocery anchors, supported by health and beauty leaders Clicks and Dis-Chem. Several brands, including Billabong, Polo, and Sportsman’s Warehouse, are entering the Empangeni and Richards Bay market for the first time. Additionally, the development includes three distinct drive-thru facilities for Burger King, Steers, and McDonald’s, further diversifying the area's fast-food offerings.
