The Alliance for Stability and Governance

The joint press conference held in Bangkok marked a pivotal shift in Thai politics as the two former rivals agreed to put aside past differences. Caretaker Prime Minister Anutin emphasized that the consensus was reached to ensure that the country can move forward without the threat of a prolonged leadership crisis. By incorporating Pheu Thai, which secured 74 seats, the Bhumjaithai led bloc now holds a commanding position in the House. This partnership is designed to provide the executive branch with the necessary legislative backing to pass critical budgets and implement stalled infrastructure projects.

A History of Friction and Realignment

This new alliance comes less than a year after a high profile split between the two organizations. In June 2025, Bhumjaithai walked out of a Pheu Thai led coalition following a diplomatic scandal involving a leaked phone call between then Premier Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Cambodian leadership. The subsequent judicial removal of Paetongtarn paved the way for Anutin to assume the premiership in September 2025. During the announcement, Anutin urged all parties to "erase misunderstandings from the past," signaling a pragmatic approach to governance over ideological purity.

The Strategic Calculus of the Shinawatras

For the Pheu Thai Party, this agreement represents a tactical survival strategy following its worst electoral performance in decades. The party, historically dominated by the influence of the currently imprisoned billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra, has seen its dominance wane in the face of rising nationalism and reformist sentiment. By joining the government as a junior partner, Pheu Thai maintains its relevance in the halls of power and keeps the door open for a potential political comeback for the Shinawatra dynasty. Analysts suggest that the party’s priority has shifted toward national benefit and stability over immediate leadership claims.
