A Rapid Escalation of Social Infrastructure Targets
The Indonesian government has unveiled an ambitious roadmap to overhaul its public housing renovation strategy, moving from a modest localized effort to a massive national undertaking. Minister of Housing and Settlements Maruarar Sirait confirmed on Monday that under the direct orders of President Prabowo Subianto, the target for housing improvements has been set at 400,000 units for the 2026 fiscal year. This figure represents a dramatic surge from the 45,000 houses targeted in the previous year, signaling a fundamental shift in the administration's approach to addressing the country's residential deficit and infrastructure quality.
Achieving Geographical Equity Through Nationwide Coverage
A primary objective of this expanded program is to eliminate the geographical gaps that characterized earlier renovation efforts. Minister Sirait noted that in the previous cycle, 220 districts and cities were entirely omitted from the program, leaving significant portions of the population without access to federal housing support. By 2026, the Ministry intends to achieve full nationwide coverage, ensuring that the economic and social benefits of the renovation drive are distributed fairly across all regions of the archipelago. This expansion is framed not merely as a construction project, but as a mechanism to stimulate regional economies and promote national fairness.
Repurposing Urban Rail Assets for Inclusive Living
The strategy for new housing developments is also evolving to utilize underused state assets in densely populated urban centers. President Prabowo has specifically directed the Ministry to explore land belonging to state-owned enterprises, particularly those in the railway sector, to facilitate the construction of public housing complexes. Sirait has already conducted preliminary inspections of several potential sites, including land in the Tanah Abang district of Jakarta, with plans to transform these high-value areas into residential hubs for the underserved.
