Chilean Military Begins Massive Fortification Project at Northern Border
Chile has officially commenced construction on a 3-meter-deep trench and a series of 5-meter-high walls along its northern frontier with Bolivia. President José Antonio Kast, who assumed office just last Wednesday, signed the executive orders on his first day to address what he characterizes as an unprecedented crisis of illegal migration and organized crime. Overseeing the start of construction in the Chacalluta area on Monday, Kast declared that the Chilean state would use its "full force" to restore national security, signaling a stark departure from previous administrative approaches to border management.
The "Border Shield" Strategy: Walls, Drones, and Biometrics
The centerpiece of the Kast administration’s domestic policy, the "Border Shield" plan, is a multi-layered security operation. In addition to physical barriers like fences and trenches across the Arica, Tarapacá, and Antofagasta regions, the government is deploying advanced surveillance technology. This includes autonomous drones, thermal imaging cameras, watchtowers, and biometric systems to monitor cross-border movement. A dedicated force of 3,000 personnel will be tasked with maintaining "absolute control" over the previously porous northern crossing points often used by irregular migrants and smuggling syndicates.
A Rightward Shift Fueled by Public Concern Over Crime and Economy
The implementation of these hardline policies follows Kast’s significant victory in the December 2025 runoff, where he secured nearly 60% of the vote. His platform, which drew comparisons to the border policies of President Donald Trump, gained traction among voters concerned by rising housing costs, strained social services, and insecurity during the previous administration of Gabriel Boric. Early polling suggests strong public backing for the move; the firm Cadem reported an 80% approval rating for the border plan and a 57% overall approval for Kast during his first week in office—the highest for any Chilean president since 2010.
