Logistical Barriers to a Traditional Site Visit

The Presidency has officially clarified the circumstances surrounding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to address victims of the recent Plateau State attacks at the Jos airport rather than at the scene of the violence. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga explained that the decision was a result of a condensed schedule and critical operational limitations at the local airfield. According to Ibrahim Ramalan, the President had to balance a high level diplomatic meeting with the Chadian leader, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, which ran longer than anticipated. These delays, coupled with the lack of nighttime navigational aids at the Jos airport, made a trip into the township unfeasible before dusk.

Navigational Constraints at the Jos Airfield

Operational safety played a significant role in the administration's decision to hold the interaction within the airport vicinity. Government officials noted that while the center of Jos is approximately a 40 minute drive from the runway, the facility lacks the necessary technology for safe night operations. This meant that any travel into the town to visit the affected communities directly would have prevented the presidential aircraft from departing safely before nightfall. To ensure the visit still took place, representatives from the impacted areas were brought to a hall adjoining the airport to meet with the President and his security team.

Deployment of Advanced Surveillance Technology

During the interaction, President Tinubu announced a significant technological intervention aimed at curbing the protracted cycle of violence in Plateau State. The Federal Government plans to deploy 5,000 artificial intelligence enabled cameras across the state to bolster law enforcement and improve real time surveillance. This move is designed to provide security agencies with better data to identify and track perpetrators of communal attacks. The President emphasized that these tools are intended to assist the military and police, who have already identified the Rukuba area as the primary epicenter of the recent hostilities.
