Heckling and Government Defense
Secretary Cifelli faced a hostile reception from the moment he took the stage. Protesters whistled and shouted over his remarks, prompting the official to engage directly with the audience. "Come on, that’s enough, there are only four of you," Cifelli remarked in an attempt to quell the interruptions.
The tension peaked when Cifelli attributed recent cultural progress to the leadership of President Javier Milei and his sister, Karina Milei. When the crowd responded with intensified boos, Cifelli repeated the attribution: "In case you didn’t understand, I’ll repeat it. Thanks to Javier Milei and Karina Milei." He further defended the administration's broader economic "freedom" policies, citing the management of the state oil company YPF as evidence of structural improvement.
Environmental Advocacy and Policy Critique
In sharp contrast to the reception of the Culture Secretary, writer Gabriela Cabezón Cámara received widespread applause for a speech that pivoted from literature to environmental activism. Cabezón Cámara delivered a staunch defense of Argentina's natural resources, particularly water access.
She specifically warned against the administration’s efforts to reform the Glacier Law, a move that activists argue would jeopardize key freshwater reserves. "Water is worth more than anything – without it there is no life," she declared, linking environmental health directly to the survival of culture and daily life in Argentina.
