Threats of Armed Blockades
Authorities confirmed they are investigating Facebook posts that encourage opponents of the settlement to block the road leading to Kaiwhaiki Marae. Most concerning were specific messages urging attendees to bring firearms, including shotguns, to the venue. Whanganui Area Manager Inspector Neil Forlong stated that police are "well under way" with planning a proportionate and thorough response to ensure the safety of all attendees.
He Rau Tukutuku: The Deed of Settlement
The signing of He Rau Tukutuku represents the culmination of years of negotiation. The settlement recently passed a significant hurdle in early April 2026:
Approval Rating: 81% of iwi members voted in favor of the negotiated redress.
Governance: 79% supported the establishment of the Takapau Whāriki Trust as the post-settlement governance entity (PSGE).
