The Execution of Operation Golf
In a proactive strike against illegal car meets, police units from Wellington, Whanganui, and Manawatū converged on the rural outskirts of Palmerston North. The operation aimed to disrupt the gathering before it could fully escalate into widespread "tearing up" of local roads. Despite the heavy police presence, the situation turned volatile at 11:30 PM near State Highway 1 and Rongotea Road, where a group of participants blocked the highway and damaged two police cruisers with thrown projectiles. Fortunately, Manawatū Area Commander Inspector Matenga Gray confirmed that no officers were injured during the skirmish.
Enforcement Outcomes and Vehicle Seizures
The preliminary results of Operation Golf indicate a significant blow to the local street racing scene. Beyond the immediate arrests for breach of bail and resisting police, authorities utilized court bailiffs to seize vehicles for unpaid fines—a tactical integration of civil and criminal enforcement. The night's tally included:
48 infringement notices issued.
9 vehicles impounded (7 by police, 2 by bailiffs).
