Urgent Security Lockdown in Jos North

The Plateau State Government has implemented a mandatory 48-hour curfew in Jos North Local Government Area, effective from midnight on Sunday, March 29, until April 1, 2026. This drastic measure follows a "barbaric and unprovoked" assault on the Gari Ya Waye community of Angwan Rukuba, which resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries. Commissioner for Information and Communication, Hon. Joyce Ramnap, stated that the curfew is essential to prevent a total breakdown of law and order while security forces track the perpetrators. The University of Jos has responded by postponing all examinations scheduled for March 30 and 31 as a safety precaution for its staff and students residing in the volatile area.

Governor Mutfwang Warns of "Urban Terrorism"

Governor Caleb Mutfwang has characterized the latest killings as a dangerous shift toward "urban terrorism," necessitating a fundamental redesign of the state’s security architecture. During a meeting with Deputy Inspector General of Police Umar Shehu Nadada, Mutfwang urged security agencies to move away from passive peacekeeping and adopt aggressive, intelligence-led operations. The Governor revealed that arrests have already begun, including an individual accused of inciting violence via social media. He emphasized that traditional and religious leaders must play a more active role in intelligence gathering, asserting that "without information, we cannot do much."

Northern Governors Push for State Policing

Amid the escalating violence, the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) has reiterated its support for the establishment of state police. Chairman of the NSGF and Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, argued during a meeting in Abuja that the complexity of modern security threats requires localized responses that only state-level forces can provide. The forum commended President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to constitutional reforms for state policing but warned against complacency. Yahaya noted that insecurity in the North is deeply linked to poverty and illiteracy, calling for massive investments in education to address the root causes of radicalization.
