The End Of A Challenging Partnership
The professional relationship between Iga Swiatek and Wim Fissette reached its conclusion after a string of disappointing results culminating in a second round exit at the 2026 Miami Open. Swiatek’s loss to Magda Linette marked the first time in seventy three tournaments that the six time Grand Slam winner suffered an opening round defeat. Despite achieving a historic Wimbledon title and completing the Surface Slam under Fissette's guidance in 2025, the partnership struggled to maintain momentum into the current season, leading to the decision to pursue a new coaching direction.
Wozniacki Critical Of Fissette’s Short Term Impact
In an interview following the split, Piotr Wozniacki admitted he was never a proponent of the Fissette appointment. He cited the coach’s history of relatively short tenures with top players as a cause for concern, suggesting that a year and a half was actually longer than many of Fissette’s previous collaborations. Wozniacki noted that while the grass court success in 2025 was a high point, the lack of consistency during the first half of that year and the stuttering start to 2026 made the dismissal unsurprising.
A Call For Domestic Communication And Understanding
Wozniacki’s primary recommendation for Swiatek’s next phase is a return to a coach who shares her native language and cultural background. He argued that the ability to "think in Polish" is a vital component of effective communication at the elite level. Based on this philosophy, he identified Dawid Celt as the most promising option currently available. Celt, who has led Poland's national team in the Billie Jean King Cup since 2018 and previously served as a hitting partner for Agnieszka Radwanska, is viewed by Wozniacki as an ambitious professional who already understands the nuances of Swiatek’s game.
