The Medical Emergency in Clearwater

While throwing a bullpen session, Robert suddenly stumbled off the mound and fell to one knee before collapsing. Phillies manager Rob Thomson, who was standing directly behind the pitcher, reported that Robert initially tried to stand back up before collapsing a second time. Medical personnel and EMTs arrived on the scene within minutes, bringing emergency equipment to the mound. Robert remained conscious for approximately five minutes before being assisted into an ambulance and transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

History of Cardiovascular Issues

This is the second major cardiac incident for Robert in less than six months. On October 31, 2025, he suffered an "unknown cardiovascular event" after a bullpen session that required trainers to administer CPR and use an external defibrillator to save his life. Following that incident, Robert was placed on blood pressure medication and underwent surgery in January 2026 to have an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) placed in his chest. On Sunday, reports indicate that the ICD was triggered as Robert stepped off the mound, functioning as intended to correct an irregular heart rhythm.

Current Status and Team Reaction

As of Monday morning, March 23, the Phillies confirmed that Robert has been discharged from the hospital after doctors reviewed the data from his ICD. Manager Rob Thomson expressed relief but acknowledged the gravity of the situation. "It was very scary, but he’s fine [now]," Thomson stated. Robert, who re-signed with the Phillies on a minor league contract in February after becoming a free agent, has previously expressed deep gratitude toward the organization's medical staff, stating he "owes everything" to them for their life-saving actions in 2025.
