Temporary Storefront Occupancy and Strategic Partnerships
Starting May 6, 2026, six retail spaces on the 900 block of Market Street will host a variety of "ephemeral users" through July. This initiative is managed by Meantime, a nonprofit arm of the design firm ISA, and utilizes properties purchased last year by Comcast and Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment. These spaces were originally slated for demolition but will now serve as a testing ground for new commercial energy in the district.
The selected tenants represent a mix of local favorites and creative ventures. Siddiq’s Water Ice and Two Persons Coffee are among the established brands taking over storefronts at 938 and 920 Market St., respectively. They are joined by vintage retailer Almost Famous and several cultural installations, including Clubfriends Radio & Records and Art Philly. Notably, these temporary occupants will not be required to pay rent, a move designed to lower the barrier to entry and quickly reduce the visual impact of commercial vacancies.
Infrastructure and Streetscape Enhancements
Beyond the storefronts, the city and the Center City District are coordinating physical improvements to the neighborhood's public realm. The plan includes the refurbishment of four SEPTA headhouses and 21 bus shelters, providing a much-needed facelift to the area's transit infrastructure. To improve the pedestrian experience, the city will also plant 42 new trees along the corridor, addressing long-standing complaints regarding the neighborhood's lack of greenery.
These efforts are a direct response to the pressure of upcoming international events. Mayor Parker emphasized that Philadelphians "deserve progress they can see," framing these immediate steps as a bridge toward long-term redevelopment. A "Market East" festival, featuring car-free streets and live music, is also scheduled for early summer to boost foot traffic and consumer confidence in the historic shopping district.
