Escapism vs. Accountability
Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has fired back at President Bola Tinubu’s recent remarks in Yenagoa, where the President suggested that Nigeria’s condition is superior to that of other African nations like Kenya. Obi argued that such "downward comparisons" serve as a refuge for a failing administration rather than a remedy for a nation in crisis. He likened the President’s rhetoric to the biblical parable of the Pharisee, who boasted of superiority to hide internal failings, and warned that ignoring statistics—the "language of progress"—will only lead to further decay.
The Hard Data of Development
To counter the President’s claims, Obi presented a comprehensive breakdown of key development indicators where Nigeria significantly lags behind its East African peer. He noted that Kenya’s Human Development Index (HDI) ranking of 143 out of 180 countries is notably better than Nigeria’s rank of 164. Furthermore, he highlighted a staggering difference in life expectancy, stating that Kenyans live an average of 67 years compared to just 54 years for Nigerians. In education, Obi pointed out that Nigeria has nearly 20 million out-of-school children, while Kenya’s figure stands at approximately 3.5 million.
Security and Economic Stability
The security comparison was particularly pointed, with Obi identifying Nigeria as the fourth most terrorized nation globally, while Kenya remains outside the bottom ten. Economically, Obi underscored the divergence in currency stability and inflation. Over the last three years, Kenya’s inflation has remained around 4.5% or lower, whereas Nigeria’s has consistently stayed above 15%. He also noted that while the Kenyan Shilling has remained stable, the Nigerian Naira collapsed from below ₦500/$1 to over ₦1,250/$1 within the same period.
