The Christmas Eve Altercation in Kalamunda
The court heard that the physical confrontation occurred around midnight near the Kalamunda Hotel in Perth’s southeast. According to police reports, Dewar struck Luis Galves Gallego in the jaw with sufficient force to cause him to lose consciousness immediately. As the victim fell backward, his head struck the pavement, resulting in a blackout that lasted approximately four minutes.
The immediate aftermath of the punch was documented by Dewar himself through the social media application Snapchat. While the victim lay unresponsive on the ground, Dewar recorded a video with a caption warning the man not to "hit on my younger sister" and adding the phrase, "keep snoring." This digital evidence has played a central role in the prosecution's case against the young man.
Judicial Proceedings and Guilty Plea
Appearing before Magistrate Justin Geoghan, Dewar responded "Guilty, Your Honour" when the charge of assault occasioning bodily harm was read. His legal representation had previously indicated that a plea would be entered during the Wednesday hearing. The admission of guilt simplifies the legal process, moving the case directly toward the sentencing phase rather than a protracted trial.
The prosecution highlighted the physical toll the attack took on Mr. Gallego, noting that the victim suffered a lacerated lip, a severely sore mouth, and localized memory loss following the trauma to his head. Despite the violent nature of the act and the provocative social media post, the defense sought a continuation of Dewar’s legal status pending the final judgment.
