Violent Incident Triggers Operation Train Investigation
A homicide investigation is currently underway in the Hawke's Bay region following a violent incident at a property on Avenue Road East in Hastings. Emergency services were summoned to the residence at approximately 6:00 am on Sunday, April 19, following reports of multiple individuals sustaining severe injuries. Upon arrival, first responders discovered a scene of significant trauma, with one person deceased and three others in critical or serious condition. Despite medical intervention, the number of fatalities rose to three, prompting the formal launch of Operation Train by regional detective units.
Forensic Findings and Judicial Non-Publication Orders
Coronial findings released on Monday have confirmed that the three victims—a woman and her two young daughters—died from multiple stab wounds. In light of the sensitive nature of the case and the ages of the victims, Coroner Bruce Hesketh has granted an interim non-publication order. This judicial mandate prohibits the release of names or any specific details that could lead to the identification of the deceased or the man currently in hospital. These restrictions are scheduled to remain in place until at least May 4, as authorities work to notify next of kin and manage the initial stages of the criminal inquiry.
Status of the Person of Interest
The primary person of interest in the case is currently under medical supervision at Wellington Hospital. Identified as the husband of the deceased woman and the biological father of the two children, the man also suffered stab wounds during the incident. He underwent surgery on Monday and remains in an unconscious state, preventing police from conducting a formal interview. Detective Inspector Martin James noted that while this individual is central to the inquiry, no charges have been laid at this stage. A dedicated team of 30 personnel is currently analyzing the forensic evidence gathered from the Avenue Road East property.
