Demands for Accountability From Electoral Leadership
The Peoples Democratic Party has officially challenged the Independent National Electoral Commission to clarify disturbing reports involving its top-tier officials. In a statement issued on Tuesday, the opposition party expressed deep concern over allegations that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, distributed land and cash gifts to senior commission staff. The PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, characterized these reports as a significant threat to the impartiality required for national democratic processes.
Allegations of Selective Financial Incentives
According to the PDP, media reports from the past week suggest that the Minister’s offers were specifically targeted at individuals within agencies that hold critical influence over election outcomes. The party pointed out a stark contrast in governance priorities, noting that essential professionals such as teachers, healthcare workers, and security personnel have not been offered similar residential benefits in the capital. The statement implies that the timing and nature of these gifts raise serious questions about the motives behind such high-value distributions.
Specific Admissions and High Level Involvement
The controversy intensified following a report cited by the PDP involving Mr. Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Supervising National Commissioner for the FCT. The party claims that Haruna has already admitted to the receipt of a land gift. Furthermore, the PDP suggested that the scrutiny extends to the very top of the organization, citing reports that INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan may himself be a beneficiary of these allocations. The party maintains that a silent response from the commission is no longer an option.
