Fatal Encounter in West Caln Township

Tragedy struck the Pennsylvania State Police late Sunday evening when a routine response to an erratic driver turned into a fatal shooting. Corporal Timothy O’Connor was patrolling the Honey Brook area around 8:16 p.m. when he received reports of a vehicle driving dangerously. O’Connor successfully initiated a traffic stop at 8:24 p.m. near the intersection of PA Route 10 and Michael Road. When the corporal failed to respond to subsequent radio checks, backup units were dispatched to the scene, where they discovered he had been shot.

Details of the Ambush and Suspect Suicide

Acting Commissioner George L. Bivens provided a preliminary account of the incident during a press conference held at Paoli Hospital. Evidence suggests the suspect, a 32-year-old male resident of Chester County, opened fire through his driver-side window as Corporal O’Connor approached the vehicle. Following the assault, the suspect reportedly exited his car, walked a short distance away, and turned the weapon on himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and his identity has not yet been publicly released pending further investigation.

Statewide Mourning and Tributes to a Hero

Governor Josh Shapiro met with Corporal O’Connor’s wife, daughter, and parents before addressing the media just after midnight on Monday. The Governor described O’Connor as a hero who died in the line of duty while protecting the public. In a gesture of solemn respect, Shapiro has ordered all Pennsylvania flags to fly at half-staff. Tributes from across the state have poured in, including statements of support from Attorney General Dave Sunday and Chester County Commissioner Eric Roe, both of whom emphasized the profound bravery and sacrifice inherent in law enforcement service.
