Judicial Shockwaves Rock Party Leadership
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been plunged into a fresh leadership crisis following an Appeal Court judgment that nullified the party’s Ibadan convention. The ruling further complicated the internal power struggle by affirming the suspension of three high-ranking officials: National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, National Organising Secretary Hon. Umar Bature, and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade. The judicial intervention has effectively invalidated recent administrative decisions, forcing the party’s various power blocs to scramble for control.
Mainstream Stakeholders Rally Around Turaki NWC
In a move to maintain institutional continuity, the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), led by Senator Adolphus Wabara, convened a high-level meeting in Abuja on Tuesday. The session included key figures such as the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC), Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde. This faction represents the established party hierarchy and is focused on navigating the legal vacuum created by the court’s decision while attempting to prevent a total collapse of the party’s central administration.
Wike-Backed Faction Demands End to Litigation
Simultaneously, a rival group known as the National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC) held a parallel meeting in the capital. This faction, reportedly backed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and led by Mohammed Abdurahman alongside the embattled Senator Samuel Anyanwu, adopted a conciliatory yet defiant tone. Addressing the media after their session, the NCWC called for party unity and urged members to cease further legal battles, arguing that prolonged litigation is actively destroying the party’s electoral prospects.
