Cleric Challenges Selective Moral Condemnation in the Church
A recent sermon by Pastor Dolapo Lawal has ignited a fierce theological debate across Nigerian social media platforms. Addressing what he termed the hypocrisy of "Church People," the lead preacher of Zoehousehold Global TV questioned the standards by which congregants judge various types of sin. Lawal posited that individuals guilty of fornication are often the loudest in their condemnation of homosexuals, arguing that such selective judgment is intellectually and spiritually dishonest. He maintained that from a scriptural perspective, both actions fall under the category of sexual sin, leaving no room for one group to claim moral superiority over the other.
Sermon Highlights Internal Hypocrisy Among Congregants
During the delivery at Zoehousehold Global TV, Lawal was blunt in his assessment of church members who maintain a standard for others that they do not apply to themselves. "A fornicator is condemning a homosexual; you're doing the same thing, it's sexual sin," the cleric stated. He further challenged those who condemn women for having children out of wedlock while secretly undergoing multiple abortions. Lawal described these individuals as being "darker than what they’re condemning," suggesting that the internal culture of many religious institutions is often masked by a thin veil of external righteousness.
Personal Anecdote Illustrates Rigidity of Church Rules
To emphasize his point regarding the church's focus on rules over transformation, Lawal shared a personal experience involving a woman from his past. He recounted successfully encouraging a former partner to attend a church service, only for her to be turned away at the entrance by an usher due to her attire. Despite Lawal’s personal pleas and his warning that the woman might never return to the faith if rejected, the usher remained moved by policy rather than restoration. The woman was ultimately asked to leave, an incident Lawal used to illustrate the destructive nature of fear driven religious rules.
