The Intersection of Domestic Life and Corporate Success
The latest research conducted by Dr. Amanda Sterling highlights a profound link between a woman's professional trajectory and her support system at home. According to the survey of 410 female leaders across New Zealand, leadership advancement is no longer viewed solely as a professional endeavor but as one deeply intertwined with family dynamics. The findings suggest that the sharing of domestic and caregiving responsibilities serves as a foundational pillar, allowing women the mental and temporal capacity to pursue high level roles.
Primary Drivers of Professional Advancement
The report identifies four cornerstone factors that have most significantly propelled women into leadership positions throughout 2026. Supportive managers lead the list, cited by 48 percent of respondents as a primary driver. This is closely followed by two factors tied at 36 percent: the presence of a supportive partner and the availability of flexible work arrangements. Rounding out the top four are formal leadership development programs, which 32 percent of participants credited for their career growth.
Strategic Analysis of Leadership Gender Gaps
While New Zealand is often perceived as a leader in gender equity, the 2026 data indicates that structural imbalances remain prevalent. Strategic analysis suggests that current leadership norms continue to privilege existing demographics because men still hold the vast majority of decision making power. This creates a cycle where the visibility of male leaders reinforces traditional expectations of what a leader looks like, subtly influencing the experiences and opportunities available to women in the pipeline.
