A Dual Masterpiece in Bronze and Platinumtech
The Viaggio nel Tempo collection marks the first time Panerai has required collectors to purchase a pair of watches as a unified set. The first timepiece, the PAM01729 Bronzo, utilizes a specialized alloy of pure tin and copper designed to develop a unique patina over time. It features a dark brown leather strap and a logo-free "California" dial that balances Roman and Arabic numerals. In stark contrast, the PAM01730 Platinumtech model uses a proprietary platinum alloy treated for increased hardness and scratch resistance. This model is notably heavier than standard gold watches and features the symbolic sandwich dial construction with circular brushing on a black base.
Mechanical Prowess and the In House Calibers
Both watches are powered by manually wound movements developed at the Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, yet they offer different levels of finishing. The Bronzo model houses the caliber P.3000, which provides a 72-hour power reserve through twin mainspring barrels and features brushed bridges. The Platinumtech version elevates the mechanical display with the caliber P.3001/10. This skeletonized movement is hand-decorated with perlage finishing on the mainplate and anglage on the bridge edges. It includes a gold-plated power reserve indicator visible through the sapphire case back, showcasing the technical depth of the brand’s modern watchmaking.
Vintage Aesthetics and Historical Design Nuances
A defining characteristic of these 47mm cushion-cased models is the use of domed Plexiglas crystals. While sapphire is standard in modern luxury watches, Panerai opted for Plexiglas to provide the curvaceous distortion found in mid-century naval instruments. Historically, these large plastic crystals were less prone to shattering under extreme pressure compared to the brittle nature of sapphire at such wide diameters. The design is further complemented by wire lugs and conical screw-down crowns, features that lean heavily into the maritime aesthetic of the 1930s and 1940s when Panerai served as a primary supplier for the Italian Navy.
