Escalation of cross border artillery fire

Pakistani border forces launched more than 100 artillery shells into eastern Afghanistan overnight, according to statements from Taliban local officials on Wednesday. This latest barrage marks the seventh consecutive day of active fighting between the two sides along the shared frontier. The strikes focused heavily on Kunar province, where authorities documented at least 101 separate rounds hitting various districts. The sustained nature of the shelling suggests a significant hardening of positions since the current wave of hostilities began in late February.

Geographic distribution of the strikes

In Kunar province, the impacts were concentrated within three specific areas. Local officials reported that 82 artillery rounds struck Sarkano district, while 15 shells hit Dangam district and an additional four landed in Shultan district. The geographical spread of the fire indicates a broad targeting of border territories. Beyond Kunar, the violence extended into neighboring Paktia province, where Pakistani forces reportedly fired mortar rounds into Samkani district. While some of these shells struck residential homes, authorities have not reported casualties from the Paktia engagement.

Impact on civilian populations and property

The human cost of the overnight shelling included at least one child wounded in the attacks, according to Taliban authorities. Residents in the affected districts have also reported heavy damage to their property and homes. The psychological and economic toll on these border communities has grown as the standoff shows no signs of abating. Despite the specific claims of civilian injury and structural destruction leveled by the Taliban officials, Pakistani authorities have not issued a public comment regarding these specific overnight reports of shelling.
