A Diplomatic Breakthrough in Urumqi
Pakistan and Afghanistan have initiated sensitive diplomatic negotiations in the northwestern Chinese city of Urumqi, marking a pivotal attempt to halt months of escalating military tension. According to senior Islamabad officials who spoke to AFP, this summit was orchestrated at the request of Beijing, which has increasingly stepped into a mediatory role within the region. The discussions began shortly after Pakistan's Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, concluded a high level briefing with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi. This meeting represents the first significant face to face engagement between the neighboring nations following a series of failed mediation attempts previously led by Qatar and Turkey.
Strategic Regional Backing for Peace
The Urumqi talks are supported by a broader coalition of regional powers, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Turkey, all of whom met in the Pakistani capital last week to discuss the conflict's resolution. Minister Dar returned from Beijing with a five point joint plan intended to bring stability to the border regions and potentially facilitate broader international dialogue involving the United States and Iran. According to sources within the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, China has pledged to play a constructive role in de-escalating the situation, acting as a neutral ground for the two governments to address their deep seated security grievances.
Islamabad Maintains Firm Security Demands
Despite the move toward dialogue, Pakistan’s core security requirements for the Afghan Taliban remain unchanged and non negotiable. A senior security official confirmed that the Pakistani delegation is demanding verifiable action against extremist groups that Islamabad claims are launching attacks from Afghan soil. According to the report, the central objective for Pakistan is ensuring that Afghan territory is never again utilized as a base for cross border strikes. While Kabul has consistently denied harboring militants, the pressure from Beijing has forced both sides to the table to address these specific allegations of terrorist support infrastructure.
