Escalation of Cross Border Hostilities
The conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan reached a critical peak on March 6 as both nations launched multiple strikes across their shared border. Islamabad has formally declared the situation an open war, representing the deadliest period of fighting between the two neighbors to date. Despite repeated appeals from the international community for restraint, the violence has entered its ninth consecutive day without signs of slowing. The United Nations mission in Afghanistan, known as UNAMA, reported that at least 56 civilians have been killed within Afghan territory since the start of the hostilities, warning that the situation is severely exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis.
Claims of Military Losses
Casualty figures reported by both governments remain high but vary significantly and lack independent verification due to the inaccessible nature of the border region. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated on Friday that the Pakistani military has killed 527 Afghan soldiers. Conversely, the Taliban run Defense Ministry in Kabul claimed its forces destroyed numerous Pakistani military posts in Nangarhar, Kandahar, Kunar, Paktia, and Khost provinces, resulting in dozens of deaths among Pakistani personnel. Earlier in the week, Afghan officials asserted they had killed 150 Pakistani soldiers while losing only 28 of their own troops.
Counter Terrorism Operations and Motives
Islamabad maintains that its military operations, which commenced last week, are aimed at targeting Afghan forces and the Tehrik e Taliban Pakistan, or TTP. Pakistan has frequently accused the Taliban government of providing a safe haven for the TTP, an allegation that Kabul consistently denies. Pakistani officials have stated that the offensive will continue until the Afghan government takes verifiable steps to control militants operating from its soil. On Friday, local officials in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province reported that several civilians were injured when Afghan mortar shells struck a village in the Mohmand district.
