A High Profile Disturbance in Shibuya
Tokyo’s Shibuya Scramble Crossing, globally recognized as one of the world's busiest pedestrian intersections, became the site of a dangerous arson incident on the evening of April 3. A man in his 50s was taken into custody early the following morning on suspicion of blocking traffic and starting a fire in the middle of the thoroughfare. According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the suspect admitted to pouring gasoline in the intersection and setting it alight before fleeing as emergency services arrived.
Rapid Emergency Response Prevents Injuries
The incident was first reported to emergency services at approximately 9:05pm after a passer-by observed a man pouring liquid from a plastic bottle and using a lighter to ignite it. Officers from the Shibuya Police Station were dispatched immediately to the scene to extinguish the flames. Despite the high volume of foot traffic typical for the area, police confirmed that no injuries were reported as a result of the fire or the subsequent panic.
The Suspect and Motive Revealed
The suspect has been identified as a painter hailing from Nagoya. Following the incident, the man arrived at a police station at approximately 9:25pm, leading to his eventual arrest. Investigators revealed that the man had placed a large piece of cardboard in the intersection containing specific written claims prior to dousing the area with fuel. While the exact nature of his claims has not been detailed by authorities, the act appears to have been a calculated attempt to draw public attention to his grievances.
