From Europa League Glory to Relegation Fears

The contrast between Tottenham Hotspur’s current state and their standing less than a year ago has left former manager Ange Postecoglou in visible "pain." Speaking on TNT Sports, the Australian coach reflected on his final interactions with the Spurs faithful—a celebration that saw 200,000 people take to the streets of London after he guided the club to Europa League silverware. Since his dismissal in June 2025, the club has cycled through Thomas Frank and now interim "firefighter" Igor Tudor, only to find themselves just one point above the Premier League relegation zone. Postecoglou admitted that watching the club's rapid decline has been a "horror" experience from the outside.

The Madrid "Horror Start" and Tactical Desperation

Tottenham's recent 5-2 loss to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last-16 served as a catalyst for Postecoglou’s critique. He pointed to the "horror start" orchestrated by Igor Tudor’s decision to drop Guglielmo Vicario for young Antonin Kinsky. The substitution of Kinsky after just 17 minutes and two costly errors was, in Postecoglou’s view, a symptom of a deeper "desperation" within the squad. He noted that players appeared physically and mentally rushed, lunging for challenges and slipping on the pitch—behaviors he attributes to the overwhelming pressure of the current "worst-case scenario" at the club.

A Squad "Lost" in the System

According to Postecoglou, the current Tottenham roster is performing far below its objective capability. Having worked with the core of the squad for two years, he insisted that the players look "fairly lost" under Tudor’s rigid management style. He emphasized that the mental state of the players is manifesting physically, leading to the uncharacteristic mistakes seen in Madrid. Postecoglou argued that the priority for any Spurs manager right now must be to "install some belief" and remind the players of their inherent quality, rather than focusing purely on tactical adjustments during a period of high emotional volatility.
