A Dispute Over Local Government Autonomy and Security
The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has entered a heated verbal exchange with the state government and the Accord Party regarding a proposed security donation. The conflict centers on a plan by local government council executives to provide operational vehicles to the Nigerian Police Force to bolster the fight against regional insecurity. Kola Olabisi, the APC Director of Media and Information, characterized the opposition to this move as "frivolous and ill-motivated," arguing that the state's ruling party is effectively obstructing efforts to safeguard citizens.
Accord Party Issues Warning to Police Command
The friction began when the Accord Party, led by Chairman Pastor Victor Akande, issued a public warning to the police regarding the acceptance of these gifts. Akande alleged that the vehicle donations were "proceeds of criminal enterprise" and cautioned that accepting them could implicate the police in local political corruption. This stance has been supported by allies of Governor Ademola Adeleke, who have questioned the source of the funding for these vehicles. The APC has fired back, claiming that the Accord Party is merely acting as a "political hanger-on" to the current administration.
The 2025 Court Reinstatement and Council Legality
At the heart of the dispute is the legal status of the local government chairmen. The APC highlighted that a Court of Appeal ruling on February 10, 2025, reinstated the APC-aligned council executives, granting them the autonomy to manage local resources and security initiatives. The APC argues that until all legal processes regarding their tenure are exhausted, these chairmen are the legitimate authorities at the local level. They contend that the state government’s criticism is an attempt to mask its own failure to prioritize security infrastructure.
