A Widespread Climate of Political Discontent

The latest UCI-OC Poll, released in April 2026, depicts a deeply frustrated electorate in Orange County, characterized by a lack of faith in both national and state leadership. President Donald Trump holds a 35% approval rating against a 62% disapproval rate, a margin that reflects significant polarization even in a historically "purple" region. According to Jon B. Gould, poll director and dean of the UC Irvine School of Social Ecology, the findings serve as a stark warning to the current administration. The data suggests that dissatisfaction is not merely a partisan sentiment but is reflective of a broader, entrenched pessimism that mirrors national trends.

Partisan Bases and the Independent Shift

While President Trump maintains over 80% approval among his Republican base, his support among other groups has largely evaporated. Among independent voters, who now represent a plurality of 36% in the county, 70% disapprove of his performance. Democrats remain almost entirely opposed at 95%. Governor Gavin Newsom’s standing is similarly precarious; while 38% of residents approve of his performance, 55% do not. Notably, his support among Democrats stands at 70%, which is significantly softer than Trump’s hold on the Republican base, indicating a potential vulnerability for state Democratic leadership.

Economic Ideology and the Generational Divide

The survey highlights a sharp split in economic attitudes among different age groups, particularly concerning capitalism and socialism. Gen Z is the only demographic to view the capitalist system negatively on a net basis, with 52% disapproval compared to 35% approval. In contrast, support for socialism peaks among these younger voters, ranging from 42% to 45%, before dropping off sharply among older residents. According to the poll report, these results indicate a shifting ideological landscape where younger generations are increasingly skeptical of traditional economic structures, even as capitalism remains the majority preference for the county as a whole.
