Nighttime Violence Erupts in Residential Austin

The West Side neighborhood of Austin became the site of a fatal encounter on Wednesday evening as gunfire erupted inside an apartment complex. According to the Chicago Police Department, officers responded to reports of shots fired at approximately 7:43 p.m. in the 100 block of North Lotus Avenue. Upon arrival, authorities discovered two male victims inside a residence, both suffering from gunshot wounds inflicted by an unknown intruder who had entered the apartment.

Casualties and Medical Response

The more severely injured victim, a 33-year-old man, sustained multiple gunshot wounds across his body. Emergency medical services rushed him to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead. The Cook County medical examiner’s office has not yet released his name pending notification of next of kin. The second victim, a 32-year-old man, was shot once in the hand. He was transported to Stroger Hospital, where he is listed in good condition and is expected to survive his injuries.

Ongoing Investigation and Search for Suspects

As of Thursday morning, the shooter remains at large. Area Four detectives have taken over the investigation, combing the North Lotus Avenue residence for forensic evidence and interviewing potential witnesses. Police have not yet established a motive for the attack or determined if the victims were specifically targeted. No weapon has been recovered from the scene, and detectives are currently reviewing nearby surveillance footage to identify any individuals seen fleeing the area around the time of the 7:43 p.m. shooting.
