Protest Erupts in Saki Over Power Rotation
The political atmosphere in Oyo State has grown increasingly tense following a visit by Senator Sharafadeen Alli to the Saki area. Alli, a leading governorship aspirant for 2027 and a High Chief from Ibadan, was met with a formal protest by the advocacy group Ẹgbẹ́ Àjọṣepọ̀ Fún Ìtẹsiwájú Gbogbo Wa. Members of the group displayed banners declaring that the Oke-Ogun region will support only a candidate from its own soil in the next election cycle. The demonstration highlights a deepening rift over power rotation, with the group insisting that the region’s turn to produce a governor is long overdue and should not be deferred.
Rejecting the "After My Tenure" Proposal
A major point of contention during Senator Alli’s visit was his statement regarding the "Gómìnà Ọ̀yọ́ Òkèògùn ló kàn" (Oke-Ogun's turn) sentiment. While acknowledging the region's right to the seat, Alli suggested that such a shift should only occur after his own administration, proposing a roundtable conference on power rotation thereafter. The Oke-Ogun group vehemently rejected this timeline, questioning why dialogue and justice must be delayed when it concerns their region. They noted that during previous eras of Ibadan political dominance, such calls for "roundtable conferences" were conspicuously absent, accusing the Senator of shifting the goalposts for regional equity.
Critique of the Ikoyi Stakeholders' Meeting
The advocacy group also launched a sharp critique of a recent meeting convened by Dr. Florence Ajimobi, wife of a former governor, in Ikoyi, Lagos. They argued that such stakeholders' gatherings fall under the official prerogative of the party chairman rather than private individuals. Furthermore, the group alleged that the meeting’s attendance was "glaringly lopsided," with heavy representation from Ibadan while regions like Oke-Ogun, Ibarapa, Oyo, and Ogbomoso were grossly underrepresented. This imbalance, they claim, undermines any pretense of fair democratic deliberation within the All Progressives Congress (APC).
