A Call for Institutional Restoration

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has challenged the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to initiate a deliberate strategy of internal repositioning. Speaking at the party’s Wadata Plaza headquarters in Abuja on Friday, Wike highlighted that the physical reopening of the secretariat—following a Federal High Court order for police to vacate the premises—must be matched by a renewal of the party’s political spirit. He urged the National Working Committee (NWC) to focus on restoring confidence among the rank and file to ensure the party remains a formidable force.

The Strategy of Aggressive Reconciliation

A central theme of Wike’s address was the need to bring back influential members who defected to other parties under the impression that the PDP could not recover. He suggested that many of these defectors left due to uncertainties regarding their political futures and the availability of electoral tickets. Wike advised the NWC to dispatch a "powerful team" to interact with these individuals, arguing that personal engagement and clear assurances are necessary to attract them back into the fold and consolidate the party's strength ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Reasserting Opposition Dominance

Wike remains firm in his stance that the PDP is the only legitimate "main opposition" party in Nigeria, a status he insists must be earned through the ballot box. He took the opportunity to dismiss smaller political groups that have recently claimed leadership of the opposition, noting their lack of success even in local government polls. Wike argued that a party cannot claim to lead the opposition without winning elections, reinforcing that the PDP’s history and structure give it a unique advantage over what he termed "shouting" minor parties.
