The Perils of Regional Alienation in Election Strategy
The prospect of a renewed alliance between Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi has sparked a sharp debate over the ethnic and religious dynamics of the 2027 presidential race. Reno Omokri, the Nigerian Ambassador-designate to Mexico, argued on Monday that such a partnership could prove to be a significant political liability in the North. According to Omokri, the "Arewa" electorate possesses a long memory regarding perceived slights and historical grievances, making the selection of a running mate a high stakes exercise in regional diplomacy. He suggested that ignoring these northern political realities would be a fundamental misunderstanding of how power is brokered in Nigeria's diverse landscape.
Historical Grievances and the Adamawa Electorate
A central point of contention in Omokri's analysis involves the 2021 assassination of Ahmed Gulak in Owerri, a prominent figure from Adamawa State. Omokri alleged that many residents in Atiku’s home state still harbor resentment over Peter Obi’s perceived reaction to that incident. The narrative of regional injury was reportedly deepened by the May 2022 killing of Harira Jubril and her children in Anambra State, an event Omokri claims Obi failed to sufficiently condemn. In a multicultural and multi-religious country, these localized tragedies can transform into national political barriers, potentially costing a candidate their own backyard during a general election.
Challenging the Viability of a Unified Opposition Ticket
The debate was triggered by media entrepreneur Dele Momodu, who recently asserted on Channels Television that a joint Atiku–Obi ticket is the only force capable of unseating President Bola Tinubu. Momodu’s perspective emphasizes the consolidation of opposition votes as a mathematical necessity for victory. However, Omokri countered this view by stating that political math in Nigeria cannot be divorced from religious considerations. He argued that symbolic gestures, such as visiting mosques or providing community donations, are often insufficient to erase deep seated voter perceptions once they have taken hold in the Northern region.
