Cyberbullying and the Weaponization of Grief

Nollywood veteran Remilekun Oshodi, popularly known as Remi Surutu, has broken her silence regarding the severe online harassment she faced for her political affiliations. During the official launch of EKO57, a Lagos-based support group for President Bola Tinubu held on Sunday, March 15, 2026, Oshodi described a campaign of "internet bashing" that crossed personal boundaries. The actress revealed that critics went as far as claiming her daughter's 2017 passing was a divine consequence of her decision to follow and campaign for the then-candidate Tinubu.

A History of Conviction Amidst Tragedy

Oshodi’s eldest daughter, Ayomikun Elizabeth Oladayo, passed away in July 2017 due to complications from sickle cell disease. Despite the passage of years, the actress noted that political opponents used the tragedy as ammunition during the 2023 campaign. “They even insulted me and said, a day to the election, that it was Asiwaju that I was following who killed my child,” Oshodi stated in a viral video from the event. Despite the vitriol, the actress emphasized that she remained resolute, voting the very next day and maintaining her stance that personal grief should not be leveraged to dictate political rights.

Defense of the Administration’s Performance

Addressing the current state of the nation, Oshodi challenged critics of the President to recognize the complexity of governing Nigeria. She argued that the administration has prevented the country from sliding into a "big mess" and praised the President's work ethic, noting that he "does not sleep." She further defended the involvement of the President’s family in public life, questioning how many other politicians have families as actively engaged in moving the country forward.
