Deconstructing the Illusion of Onscreen Intimacy
Adeoluwa Okusaga, a rising figure in the Nollywood film industry and former Big Brother Naija housemate, has publicly addressed the persistent public perception that actors enjoy romantic exchanges on set. During a recent appearance on the Nolly Icons podcast, the actor, popularly known as Saga, clarified that the reality of filming such scenes is far removed from the polished romance seen by audiences. He noted that while viewers may perceive these moments as pleasurable, they often involve a level of discomfort that is rarely acknowledged by the public.
The Mechanical Reality of Romantic Performance
According to Okusaga, the process of kissing a colleague for a production is inherently "weird" and lacks any personal satisfaction. He described the experience as an invasion of personal space, specifically citing the unpleasant nature of sharing saliva with various co-stars under the watchful eyes of a film crew. Despite having performed in numerous romantic roles, the thespian maintained that he has yet to experience what he would categorize as a "good" onscreen kiss, primarily because the environment and the repetitive nature of the task strip the act of any genuine emotion.
Professional Duty Versus Personal Preference
The actor revealed that his participation in romantic scenes is driven solely by his commitment to accurate script interpretation. Okusaga stated that if he were given the executive power to choose, he would opt to avoid kissing scenes entirely. He highlighted the taxing nature of the job by recounting a specific instance on a film set where he was required to kiss four different actresses in a single day of production. This volume of work, he argued, reinforces the idea that these actions are professional obligations rather than leisure activities.
