Allegations of Judicial Disobedience
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has formally accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of undermining the 2027 electoral process through persistent disobedience of court orders. In a statement released on April 21, 2026, National Secretary Mr. Ogini Olaposi highlighted that the commission’s failure to resolve internal party leadership disputes in accordance with judicial rulings creates a significant risk for the national election schedule. Olaposi expressed concern that an institution led by high-ranking legal professionals is currently ignoring mandates from the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory.
The Agbo Major Leadership Dispute
Central to the party’s grievance is a recent judgment compelling INEC to update its records within 72 hours to recognize the Agbo Major-led National Working Committee (NWC). Despite three weeks passing since Justice Bello Kawu delivered the ruling, the NNPP claims that INEC has yet to file an affidavit of compliance or offer a credible explanation for the delay. The party insists that this administrative stall is draining valuable preparation time, which could ultimately force an adjustment to the 2027 general elections timetable to ensure equity among political participants.
Ultimatum and Threat of Contempt Proceedings
The NNPP has issued a strict seven-day ultimatum to the commission to comply with the court's directive. Should INEC fail to act within this window, the party intends to initiate contempt proceedings and pursue the matter to the Supreme Court of Nigeria. According to Olaposi, the judiciary must protect its jurisdiction and ensure that lawful orders are not undermined by executive agencies. The party argues that INEC's current conduct constitutes a direct threat to the nation's democratic stability and requires immediate intervention from the Federal Government.
