The End of an Era for NNPP in Kano

The political landscape of Kano State has undergone a seismic shift following the formal exit of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). Habibu Mohammad, the spokesperson for the influential Kwankwasiyya Movement, announced during an appearance on Arise TV that the NNPP is now "effectively dead" in Kano and across the federation. Mohammad argued that because the party's identity was almost entirely synonymous with Kwankwaso’s leadership, his departure on March 29, 2026, leaves the organization without its primary engine of mobilization and support.

Kwankwaso’s Swift Move to the African Democratic Congress

Following his resignation from the NNPP, Kwankwaso officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on March 30, 2026. This rapid transition has immediate implications for party structures in Northern Nigeria. Mohammad noted that just as Kwankwaso was the face of the NNPP in Kano, he will now be recognized as the personification of the ADC in the state. This move is expected to trigger a mass migration of loyalists from the "red cap" movement into the ADC, effectively hollowing out the NNPP’s grassroots base.

Impact on National and Regional Politics

The Kwankwasiyya spokesperson believes that the defection will have a "domino effect" beyond the borders of Kano. He predicted that politicians from neighboring states who were previously aligned with the NNPP solely due to Kwankwaso’s influence will soon follow suit. This consolidation is viewed by the movement as a strategic strengthening of the ADC on both a local and national level, positioning it as a major contender against the ruling APC and the PDP as the 2027 general elections approach.
