National Rail Infrastructure Braces for Peak Holiday Traffic
The Nigerian Railway Corporation has officially initiated a comprehensive strategy to manage the significant uptick in domestic travel expected during the upcoming Eid-el-Fitr celebrations. In a statement released on Wednesday by Chief Public Relations Officer Callistus Unyimadu, the agency detailed a series of operational expansions designed to provide a seamless and safe transportation experience. These temporary measures are aimed at mitigating the pressure on the nation’s primary transport arteries, ensuring that the surge in passenger volume does not lead to significant delays or safety compromises at major transit hubs.
Enhanced Frequency on High Demand Urban Corridors
A primary focus of the NRC’s festive schedule is the Lagos–Ibadan corridor, which remains one of the most heavily utilized rail links in the country. Starting March 19, 2026, the corporation will deploy three special trips operating from both ends of the route to handle heightened movement. Departures from the Mobolaji Johnson Station in Lagos have been staggered throughout the day to offer maximum flexibility, with similar return services originating from the Moniya Station in Ibadan. This increased frequency is a direct response to the historical data suggesting a massive exodus from the commercial capital toward the hinterlands during the Sallah period.
Strategic Adjustments for Northern and Eastern Rail Lines
The Abuja–Kaduna route will also see a marked increase in activity, with the NRC committing to two special trips on March 19 followed by a consistent three-trip daily schedule through March 23. This expansion is critical for maintaining connectivity between the federal capital and northern commercial centers during the religious holiday. Meanwhile, the corporation confirmed that services on the Warri–Itakpe corridor and the Port Harcourt–Aba narrow gauge line will maintain their regular operational structures. These decisions reflect a balanced approach to resource allocation, ensuring that high-traffic zones receive priority while regional lines remain dependable for local commuters.
