A New Era for West African Border Security

Nigeria is set to become one of the first nations in Africa to adopt a large-scale, AI-enabled defense architecture following a $190 million agreement with Marine and Remote Sensing Solutions (MARSS). The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed in London on March 19, 2026, initiates a comprehensive program designed to modernize the country’s response to asymmetric warfare, including terrorism and organized insurgency. This "NiDAR" system will provide a fully integrated C4I (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence) framework, effectively creating a digital shield over Nigeria’s most vulnerable borders and vital national assets.

The Technological Backbone: NiDAR and AMM

At the heart of this multi-domain defense strategy is MARSS’ proprietary NiDAR C4I system, which fuses data from various sensors and platforms into a single tactical picture. The program includes a fleet of expeditionary vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) managed via Autonomous Mission Management (AMM) technology. Unveiled in late 2025, AMM allows a single operator to oversee up to ten unmanned systems simultaneously, enabling autonomous reconnaissance in hostile environments where deploying ground troops would be too dangerous. This "Edge to Mission Command" (E2MC) capability ensures that live data from the field is transmitted instantly to regional and national command hubs.

Building Sovereign Capability and Infrastructure

The contract extends beyond the delivery of hardware and software; it focuses on the long-term sustainability of Nigeria's defense forces. A new national command center will be established, featuring a dedicated Centre of Excellence. This facility is designed to provide ongoing training for Nigerian operators, ensuring the military maintains a high state of operational readiness without total reliance on foreign contractors. By working with local partners to build this sovereign capability, MARSS intends to support Nigerian security agencies in creating a future-proofed defense network that can evolve alongside emerging regional threats.
