The Commencement of a Billion Dollar Agricultural Transformation

Nigeria has officially initiated the pilot phase of the National Integrated Poultry Project, a landmark one billion dollar venture funded through the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership. Announced in early 2026, the project is designed to fundamentally restructure the nation’s poultry value chain by integrating large scale bird rearing with massive crop production. Pilot operations are currently underway in Enugu, Kaduna, and Oyo states, serving as a testing ground for a nationwide rollout scheduled for 2027. This initiative represents one of the most significant investments in Nigerian agro-industrial infrastructure in recent decades, aimed at achieving total self-reliance in protein production.

Addressing the Structural Feed Crisis Through Integrated Farming

A critical component of the project involves the cultivation of 60,000 hectares of land dedicated specifically to maize and soybean production. This strategic move directly addresses the chronic feed shortages and rising costs that have historically crippled smallholder poultry farmers in Nigeria. By producing its own feed, the project creates a sustainable and insulated supply chain that is less vulnerable to global market fluctuations. According to Joseph Tegbe, the Director-General of the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership, this integrated approach ensures that the poultry facilities have a guaranteed input of high-quality feed, which is essential for maintaining the health and productivity of millions of birds.

Ambitious Production Targets for National Egg and Meat Supply

The technical specifications of the project outline a massive increase in domestic output, with a target of housing over seven million laying birds and two million broilers. When fully operational, these facilities are expected to generate approximately six million eggs daily, significantly lowering the consumer price for essential proteins. The project encompasses the entire spectrum of poultry production, including modern hatcheries, processing plants, cold storage facilities, and advanced distribution networks. This full-spectrum approach is intended to modernize the industry, replacing fragmented production methods with a highly efficient, automated system capable of meeting the demands of a growing population.
