A Historic Milestone in Aviation Oversight
The Nigerian aviation sector has reached a new benchmark in safety compliance, securing a 91.45 percent effective implementation rating from the International Civil Aviation Organisation. President Bola Tinubu described the result as impressive during a debriefing session at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority headquarters in Abuja. This assessment, conducted through the Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme, serves as a critical validation of the country’s ability to manage safety risks and adhere to rigorous international air navigation standards.
Outperforming Regional and Global Safety Standards
The latest audit results place Nigeria significantly ahead of its peers, with the 91.45 percent score far surpassing the West African regional average of 61.1 percent and the global average of 70.4 percent. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga noted that this performance is the highest since the audit program's inception in 1999. By exceeding these international benchmarks, Nigeria is positioning itself to strengthen its credibility within the global aviation community, which officials believe will directly translate into heightened investor confidence and improved operational safety.
Strategic Focus on Infrastructure as an Economic Enabler
President Tinubu has identified the enhancement of transportation infrastructure as a primary driver for the nation’s economic prosperity. Since assuming office, the administration has prioritized the air transport sector, aiming to transform Nigeria into a hub that meets the highest best practices beyond the African continent. The president has urged the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development to maintain this momentum by diligently implementing every recommendation provided by the ICAO auditors to ensure long term regulatory excellence.
